Recent heavy rains caused some flooding and several washouts - May. 14, 2014

Two heavy rainfalls last month kept the town’s public works crew busy.
Superintendent Terry Acton, in his monthly report to Saint Andrews council, said 50 mm of rain fell April 8 plus additional snow melt while there was 35 mm of rain plus snow melt April 16.
During these events he said there was some flooding and several washouts. Acton said the public works crew worked continuously through these events clearing debris from catch basins and filling in washouts. A culvert steamer was rented to steam frozen culverts before the rain started.
The crew from the W. C. O’Neill Arena has now joined the public works crew for the summer season and will be helping with spring clean-up as well as taking care of the lawns throughout the town.
Acton noted that due to the prolonged winter and the ice storm, the public works department is running about two weeks behind with its regular spring clean-up schedule.
Later in the meeting Mayor Stan Choptiany read a letter received from resident Phoebe Anne Magee praising the crew for the wonderful job it did on the town streets and sidewalks during the winter.
“Not only did they do a great job – they did it day after day and night – under the most difficult conditions experienced for years. Bravo town crew and thanks,” she wrote.
