St. Stephen resident Diane Ganong has been asked by town council to spearhead the formation of a committee which will act as a liaison between council and other tourism and promotional groups in the community.
Ganong, chair of the St. Stephen Area Chamber of Commerce’s promotion and development committee, spoke to a meeting of council last week to encourage the town to keep “a good flow of communication going” between it and the chamber.
“Sometimes we don’t talk to each other as much as we should,” said Ganong.
She asked council if it was willing to support a liaison committee between it, the chamber, the Business Improvement Area (BIA), Development St. Stephen, local service clubs and the Love St. Stephen group.
The committee will enable everyone to “have a sense of what other people are doing so we can work together and reinforce the efforts that are being put forth.”
Ganong also asked council to keep such a committee informed of what the town’s planning, promotion and tourism committee is doing. She said that committee had mandates similar to the one she chairs for the chamber.
“I think the communication has improved dramatically over the past few years, and I think it’s due to the people involved,” said Ganong, giving credit to past chamber president Dale Weeks.
“I have to say Dale Weeks is the person who sort of started this. When he took over the chamber he really made quite a few changes. It’s become more inclusive than it was before and great progress has been made and I’m hoping the momentum will continue.”
Ganong said that while her chamber committee’s main project is the annual Christmas promotion it was willing to expand its mandate to other projects.
Ganong accepted council’s offer for her to chair a liaison committee and said the first would be a brainstorming session.
