ST. STEPHEN - The 8th annual Charlotte County Relay for Life is looking for additional teams to join those who have already registered for this year’s event.
Ron Goodine, chair of the team recruitment committee for the 12-hour relay, said 22 teams have already registered.
He’d like to see double that number take part.
“The teams are a bit slower to register this year,” said Goodine.
The relay, which raises funds for the Canadian Cancer Society, will take place at the track and field facilities behind St. Stephen High School, beginning at 7 p.m.
June 11 and concluding at 7 a.m. Saturday, June 12.
Each team should ideally have 10 to 12 members. “They can walk, amble or run.
They just need to take their turn representing their team on the track,” said Goodine.
The team members are each asked to raise at least $100 in pledges. Each participant receives a T-shirt, a meal ticket and teams are treated to live musical entertainment throughout the night as well as some snacks and treats.
“All we need is for people to sign up and enjoy,” said Goodine.
Goodine said many of the relay teams in years past have thrown themselves wholeheartedly into having a good time during the relay. The team members decide upon a theme, dress in costume and trim up their tent areas in the centre of the field.
“They really make it a fun time,” said Goodine.
Anyone wishing to enter a team in this year’s relay is urged to contact Goodine at 466-1601 or Ellen Mansfield at 529-1890.
Goodine emphasized the importance of the public attending the relay. “We would like the public to come out and support the teams, the survivors and take part in the luminary service,” he said. The luminary service is held after dark. Candles lining the track, representing those who are fighting a battle with cancer or those who have fought and lost, are lit while a lone bagpiper marches around the track.
Goodine has his relay weather prediction all set for this year.
“I’m predicting a warm night with a little breeze to keep the bugs down. At least that’s what the hope is,” he said laughing, remembering all too well a few rainy relays in the past.
