New e-mail scam going around - Jul. 21, 2010
ST. GEORGE – There’s a new e-mail scam going the rounds from someone purporting to be from the Ivory Coast who is looking for help investing $35.5 million to establish a medical institute in a foreign country.
The letter, from “Joyce Thompson”, starts out “Hello dear” and goes on to explain how she had been a medical student at the University of CoCody in Abidjan when the rebels in that country killed her parents as her father, Thompson Weller, as a highly reputable doctor and politician, was a prime target.
She says he had a foreign account with up to $35.5 million which his will stated was to establish a medical establishment overseas. Thompson says she can only inherit the money if it is specifically used for this purpose as her father wanted her to practice out of her country because of the unpredictable political situation there.
She says she is looking to invest in Canada and explains that the percentage sharing would be 75 per cent to establish a hospital, 20 per cent for the services of the person who helps her and five per cent for international/local expenses incurred.
Sgt. Greg MacAvoy of District 1 RCMP said this sounds like yet another scam and people should not be giving out any of their personal banking information to strangers.
