Polar Bear Dip
DESCRIPTION: CALAIS — There was an early beach party held on the shores of Passamaquoddy Bay. The 10th annual Washington County Community College Polar Bear Dip in benefit of the Ronald McDonald House in Bangor, had a party theme as the college celebrated their 40th anniversary. The shore was lined as hundreds of spectators braved frigid temperatures to cheer on 74 even braver dippers who ran into the surf. Courier photojournalist John Gardner captured some of the chilly participants during the event, which raised $10,155 for Ronald McDonald House. The event was held in memory of Wayne and Lorraine Rice who had been longtime supporters of the college until their deaths in a car accident this past January.
