St. Stephen – The horse pull scheduled for July 23 at Ganong Nature Park has been cancelled.
Park manager Shelley Scott said there wasn’t enough funding to support the event.
“We are non-profit and financially, I can’t afford to run something I know we’re not going to break even on. Financially, for us to do it was just irresponsible,” said Scott.
Scott said hosting the horse pull would cost the park about $4,000, which included $2,250 in prize money to the winning teams.
She said besides prize money, the park would have to purchase drags and sand and other equipment for the pull, as well as pay for sound equipment for announcing, and advertising costs relating to the event.
Scott said the money that had been promised by sponsors was “just too low”, and park administration did not believe it could depend on the minimal gate fee of $5 per car for the event to make up the shortfall.
Scott said local businesses are asked for so much “for everything” and the financial support “just wasn’t there.”
Horse pull organizer Amber Leavitt said she is disappointed by the decision, but acknowledged she was told “the funds aren’t there.”
“If we can find another spot maybe we can have it next year,” said Leavitt.
