St. George – The Fundy Mariners junior varsity girls volleyball team hosted the South West Regional Tournament at Fundy Middle and High School last past Saturday.
The Mariners are now hosting the provincial tournament this weekend as the third seed from the South West.
The seven team Regional tournament was split into two pools – the Mariners (finishing the regular season first in the south with an undefeated 6-0 record), Rothesay Red Hawks (third in the South), and Woodstock Thunder were placed in Pool A, while the St. Stephen Spartans (fourth in the South), Carleton North Stars, Hampton Huskies (second in the South), and Polyvalente Thomas-Albert squared off in Pool B.
In an early morning match last Saturday, the Mariners defeated the Red Hawks 2-0 (25-13, 25-13), but later fell 2-1 to the Thunder. After dropping 25-17 in the first set, the Mariners came back to win the second 25-20, but were edged 15-10 by the Thunder in the third set.
Finishing preliminary play second in their pool, the Mariners advanced to the semifinal (2nd Pool A vs. 1st Pool B) to meet PTA.
Despite two competitive sets, the Mariners fell 2-0 (25-22, 25-19) to PTA. In the battle for third seed, the Mariners handily defeated the Huskies 2-0 (25-6, 25-13).
Mariners coach Sylvie Whippie said she felt the team’s regional tournament performance was “OK”, and identified “little details” she plans to work on with the team in the week before the provincial tournament.
“There was little things, little details – hopefully next weekend it will be back on track.
“Just more power at the hit, but also placement, because you don’t have to kill it every time, so pay more attention to the other team, how well they move, where they’re going, what kind of defensive system they use, more technical stuff,” Whippie said, and noted the team has improved a great deal since the beginning of the season.
“They’re doing stuff that we weren’t doing at the beginning of the year, and now it’s falling into place and it’s really nice. I just love the team, their attitude and team spirit is really good. I really like it and they make everybody feel comfortable and that’s a big plus.”
As the third seed, the Mariners will meet the second seed from the North East Regional Tournament (James M. Hill) in their first game at the provincial tournament, slated for 10 a.m. Saturday at Fundy Middle and High School.
