St. Stephen – Plans are under way for a giant flea market to be held at the Patrick Connors Recreational Complex in late April or early May.
Alex Fitzpatrick, who made a presentation to village council last week, said the idea was to put together an event where people can get rid of things and raise some money for charity. He said the date would be set so the event didn’t clash with other community yard sales.
He said there are two charities in the area which are severely under-funded – the breakfast/lunch program at Blacks Harbour Elementary School and the St. George and area food bank.
His proposal includes dividing the ice surface area into two sections – one section would have tables set up where items sold would go towards these charities while the other would be for people to sell their wares.
Set up would be from 8 a.m. to noon on the Friday then the flea market would be open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. that day as well as 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the Saturday. Admission will be $1 plus a food bank donation and the cost to set up a table will be $10.
“If we get proper advertising we should be able to get people from St. Stephen, Saint Andrews and St. George. There is a lot of promotion to do between now and then.”
Kirkpatrick asked village council to donate the ice surface of the arena for the event as well as one staff person.
Coun. Mike Chase said he thought it was a great idea while Coun. Adam Hatt said he could provide Kilpatrick with some contacts of people who would be interested in taking part.
Kilpatrick said he will need 10 volunteers on site for the weekend of the event and will be talking to the food bank, the school and various churches.
Council agreed to accept the proposal and will donate the space and necessary staff on a date to be announced for the hours Kirkpatrick is asking for.
