At the Charlotte County Hospital, St. Stephen, NB, on Sunday, April 1, 2018, Gertrude Freda (Merchant) Stoddard, wife of Lewis Stoddard of Old Ridge, NB. Born in Chamcook, NB, she is the daughter of the late Hazen Walter and Marjorie Alice (Libby) Merchant.
Gertrude was the former owner and proprietor of Valley View Manor Nursing Home in which she dedicated 19 years to the service of elders in her community.
Surviving, in addition to her husband Lewis, are her children, Eva Gertrude Whittaker (John) of Kelowna, BC, Wanda Lou Higgins (Doug) of Old Ridge, NB, Lynn Charlotte Alice Miles (Marx), Dwayne Eldon Stoddard (Bruce), all of Fredericton, NB, and Kevin Roy Stoddard (Karen Kent) of St. Stephen, NB; 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Della Upham (Myron) of St. Stephen, NB, and Victoria VanDriest of Fredericton, NB; several, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Gertrude was predeceased by her son Linwood, brothers Raymond and Eldon, sister Elizabeth Holcolmb, two half- brothers Charlie Merchant and Dias Merchant, and a half-sister Vida.
The funeral service in celebration of her life was held on Thursday, April 5, 2018 at 2 p.m. Wayne Hutchison officiated. Accompanist was Heather Disher. Active pallbearers were Greg Upham, Gerald Disher, Joe Miles, Jason Russell, Dwayne Stoddard and Kevin Stoddard. A reception immediately followed in the funeral home reception centre. The interment will take place at a later date in St. Andrews Rural Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Alzheimer Society or charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
