Age 92, Norma Grace (Johnston) Hayman passed away peacefully on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at the home of her son Thomas Hayman and daughter-in-law Sharon Gates, Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, NS. Born in Ludlow, NB on September 17, 1927, Norma was the daughter of the late Charles and Edith (Hovey) Johnston.
She was the last surviving member of her immediate family, being predeceased by brothers Harvey and Donald, and her husband John D. (Jack.)
She is survived by her daughter Ann (Sidney) Higgins; sons Dr. CA Gordon (Carol Macdonald), John (Raylene), Thomas (Sharon Gates) and Robert (Salvie) Hayman; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Before moving to Nova Scotia in 2002, following the death of her husband, Norma spent over 50 years in St. Stephen, NB raising her children and being actively involved in her community. She was a member of the IODE, Eastern Star, the local curling club, Meals on Wheels, and the hospital auxiliary for a number of years.
She took great pleasure in reading, her gardens and needlework. Baptist faith was important to Norma from the time she was a young girl and she actively attended, and participated in, faith-related activities wherever she resided.
A special thanks to Dr. Holly Zwicker, the staff from VON and Paramed for the care provided to Norma over the past several months. They allowed her to be home for the Christmas season where she was able to enjoy her family.
As Norma wished, her body has been donated to the Facility of Medicine at Dalhousie University for research purposes. Donations in her memory can be made to a charity of your choice. Memorial and interment services to be held at a later date.
