SAINT ANDREWS – The Town of Saint Andrews wants to highlight and promote the area’s recreation offerings.
Merven Hanselpacker, the town’s recreation manager, said the goal of their recreation expo on Aug. 24 is to bring together community, sport and recreation organizations “to highlight and promote” the town and surrounding areas’ offerings.
Hanselpacker said he has contacted more than 30 organizations and currently has 28 confirmed. When he joined the town and did community engagement, Hanselpacker said people told him they weren’t aware of certain recreation or leisure options available in the area.
“I wanted to get something together where people could come in and see everything in one spot,” he said.
His goal is to have options available for all age groups and noted the expo is not just for those living in Saint Andrews. Hanselpacker expects some of the groups that participated in the recent Eastern Charlotte recreation expo will be be in attendance and he is anticipating some from St. Stephen to participate.
The idea is a full health and wellness expo with recreation and wellness groups.
“I wanted to make sure that we had a few offerings for health, fitness and wellness there as well,” he said, noting there will be a yoga instructor at the event. Spindrifters, a group catering to those aged 50 and older, will participate.
Hanselpacker said he spoke with representatives from Eastern Charlotte who organized that event and is using some of what they learned to help inform and design what he is doing in Saint Andrews.
“I’m really excited about getting it going, and one of the biggest things is that so many people in the community don’t know all of the things we have already in our community.”
The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. at the W.C. O’Neill Arena Complex.
